QUESTION 071Not studied yet

What does an engine's brake thermal efficiency indicate?

General principlesCompared with sources

Answer

Brake thermal efficiency is the useful mechanical energy at the engine shaft divided by the energy consumed in the fuel. The higher it is, the greater the proportion of fuel energy used to do work.

A simple explanation

Brake thermal efficiency indicates what proportion of fuel energy is converted into useful mechanical work at the engine shaft. The remaining energy is lost as heat, in the exhaust gases and through friction. Quantities with the same dimensions must be compared: work with energy, or power with the rate of energy input.

REMEMBER

Useful energy ÷ total energy consumed.

For an instructor and a small group: choose one C/CE freight transport topic in the Lithuania and EU context. Use your own devices, including a phone and a computer.

  1. 3 questions. In ‘Recall’ mode, first answer in your own words, then read the explanation and mark what needs more review.
  2. A lesson and a diagram. Discuss what they explain and which conditions matter.
  3. One scenario. Decide before revealing the solution. Explain the reasons for your chosen action.
  4. A few quiz questions. Read the explanation for each option. You can finish the quiz early; the remaining questions will be marked as unanswered.
  5. Discussion. Everyone names one useful point and one thing that needs correcting.

How can you share or suggest a correction?

You will find the question link and feedback field below this section. Lessons, diagrams and scenarios have their own ‘Copy link’ button. ‘Suggest a correction’ helps you prepare a note with the specific link and version label. Copy or download the text and pass it on for review.

Discuss: is it easy to find an answer and return to the question? Can you explain the reason and the limits of the rule's application? Which sentence is misleading? Flag any significant legal or safety uncertainty for checking before using the material.
