How should engine braking, the retarder and service brakes be coordinated on a long descent?

Control speed using a suitable gear and the permitted auxiliary braking systems, and use the service brakes as much as needed to slow safely. Monitor speed, temperature and warnings.
Please note
There is no single gear, retarder setting or braking pattern for all trucks. If a dangerous defect occurs, stop safely and follow the instructions.
A simple explanation
Engine braking allows the engine to absorb energy from the vehicle's motion, while the retarder provides additional sustained braking. This reduces the thermal load on the wheel brakes. If the selected operating mode no longer holds the speed, reduce speed safely in good time; do not wait until overheated brakes lose effectiveness.
Auxiliary braking holds speed; service brakes slow the vehicle when needed.
