How does the magnitude of the required centripetal force change when travelling through a bend at a constant speed?

General principlesCompared with sources

Answer

When travelling through a bend at a constant speed, the magnitude of the required centripetal force is F = mv²/R. It is greater where the local turn radius R is smaller; on a section with a constant radius, its magnitude does not change.

A simple explanation

A force directed towards the inside of the bend is needed to change the direction of motion. When mass and speed are constant, a smaller turn radius means a greater force is required. Drivers need to recognise a tightening bend and choose an appropriate speed in advance.

REMEMBER

Smaller turn radius → greater lateral force.

Learning objective: Explain why a greater lateral force is required at the same speed when the turn radius decreases. EU syllabus area: 1.4. The relationship F = mv²/R has been checked; this is an idealised model, not a calculator for the safe speed through a specific bend.

Learning together and feedback

Try it together in 25–30 minutes

For an instructor and a small group: choose one C/CE freight transport topic in the Lithuania and EU context. Use your own devices, including a phone and a computer.

  1. 3 questions. In ‘Recall’ mode, first answer in your own words, then read the explanation and mark what needs more review.
  2. A lesson and a diagram. Discuss what they explain and which conditions matter.
  3. One scenario. Decide before revealing the solution. Explain the reasons for your chosen action.
  4. A few quiz questions. Read the explanation for each option. You can finish the quiz early; the remaining questions will be marked as unanswered.
  5. Discussion. Everyone names one useful point and one thing that needs correcting.

How can you share or suggest a correction?

You will find the question link and feedback field below this section. Lessons, diagrams and scenarios have their own ‘Copy link’ button. ‘Suggest a correction’ helps you prepare a note with the specific link and version label. Copy or download the text and pass it on for review.

Discuss: is it easy to find an answer and return to the question? Can you explain the reason and the limits of the rule's application? Which sentence is misleading? Flag any significant legal or safety uncertainty for checking before using the material.
