QUESTION 003Not studied yet

Illustrative operating points: A – 100 kW and 22 kg of fuel per hour; B – 100 kW and 25 kg per hour. Which has lower specific fuel consumption?

Illustrative calculation • engine fuel consumptionCompared with sources

Answer

Point A: 220 g/kWh, compared with 250 g/kWh at point B. Both deliver the same useful power, while A uses less fuel.

Please note

These are illustrative steady-state operating data, not a test of a particular truck or a prediction of journey fuel consumption.

A simple explanation

Divide the fuel mass flow in grams per hour by the useful power in kilowatts: 22 000 / 100 = 220 g/kWh, and 25 000 / 100 = 250 g/kWh. Comparing only the lower kg/h figure would be insufficient if the power outputs also differed. This parameter differs from the vehicle's overall fuel consumption for a journey in l/100 km.

REMEMBER

Specific fuel consumption = fuel flow / useful power.

For an instructor and a small group: choose one C/CE freight transport topic in the Lithuania and EU context. Use your own devices, including a phone and a computer.

  1. 3 questions. In ‘Recall’ mode, first answer in your own words, then read the explanation and mark what needs more review.
  2. A lesson and a diagram. Discuss what they explain and which conditions matter.
  3. One scenario. Decide before revealing the solution. Explain the reasons for your chosen action.
  4. A few quiz questions. Read the explanation for each option. You can finish the quiz early; the remaining questions will be marked as unanswered.
  5. Discussion. Everyone names one useful point and one thing that needs correcting.

How can you share or suggest a correction?

You will find the question link and feedback field below this section. Lessons, diagrams and scenarios have their own ‘Copy link’ button. ‘Suggest a correction’ helps you prepare a note with the specific link and version label. Copy or download the text and pass it on for review.

Discuss: is it easy to find an answer and return to the question? Can you explain the reason and the limits of the rule's application? Which sentence is misleading? Flag any significant legal or safety uncertainty for checking before using the material.
