Greater mass and an uphill gradient require more tractive force at the wheels, so a lower starting gear may be needed. Select it according to the load, gradient, grip and transmission instructions.

Not every transmission has a low range; more torque does not remove the limit of tyre grip.
A simple explanation
A low gear allows greater wheel torque at low speed. A starting gear that is too high may require the clutch to slip for longer and increase its load. An automatic transmission may select the starting gear itself, but its capabilities and the driver's actions depend on the equipment.
