Retarder performance is limited by its design, rotational speed, heat dissipation and tyre grip. Match the setting to the road surface and the specific vehicle's instructions.

A simple explanation
A hydrodynamic retarder converts the energy of motion into heat, which the cooling system must dissipate. On a slippery road, excessive braking torque can compromise grip. Therefore, reduce speed earlier and do not assume that an auxiliary system will maintain control in all conditions.
A retarder has both thermal and grip limits.
