In this situation, the lane change has not yet begun. There is no universally safe gap: it depends on speeds, visibility and the movement of the entire vehicle combination.
A simple explanation
A motorcycle may approach faster than a single glance in the mirror suggests. Spotting its approach early allows you to abandon the manoeuvre before the vehicles come dangerously close. Before trying again, recheck the mirrors and blind spots; the absence of a warning from an assistance system does not confirm that the lane is clear.
