QUESTION 112Not studied yet

Why is a truck’s total stopping distance longer than its braking distance alone?

General air-brake operating principleCompared with sources

Answer

Braking distance is added to the distance travelled while noticing and reacting to a hazard, plus the delay before the brakes take effect. With air brakes, braking does not begin at the exact instant you press the pedal.

Please note

This explanation alone cannot be used to calculate a particular truck’s stopping distance.

A simple explanation

The vehicle continues moving while the driver recognises the hazard and the brakes begin to act. Speed, attention, grip and brake condition therefore affect the whole stop, not just its final part.

REMEMBER

Notice – react – brakes take effect – stop.

Learning together and feedback

Try it together in 25–30 minutes

For an instructor and a small group: choose one C/CE freight transport topic in the Lithuania and EU context. Use your own devices, including a phone and a computer.

  1. 3 questions. In ‘Recall’ mode, first answer in your own words, then read the explanation and mark what needs more review.
  2. A lesson and a diagram. Discuss what they explain and which conditions matter.
  3. One scenario. Decide before revealing the solution. Explain the reasons for your chosen action.
  4. A few quiz questions. Read the explanation for each option. You can finish the quiz early; the remaining questions will be marked as unanswered.
  5. Discussion. Everyone names one useful point and one thing that needs correcting.

How can you share or suggest a correction?

You will find the question link and feedback field below this section. Lessons, diagrams and scenarios have their own ‘Copy link’ button. ‘Suggest a correction’ helps you prepare a note with the specific link and version label. Copy or download the text and pass it on for review.

Discuss: is it easy to find an answer and return to the question? Can you explain the reason and the limits of the rule's application? Which sentence is misleading? Flag any significant legal or safety uncertainty for checking before using the material.
