Increasing i = n₁/n₂, at the same input torque and speed, makes the output turn more slowly and increases its torque: ideally M₂ = iM₁; in practice, there are losses.

The gear number and gear ratio are not the same: a higher gear usually has a lower gear ratio.
A simple explanation
When the gear ratio i increases while the input remains the same, output speed decreases and output torque increases. This is similar to a low gear on a bicycle: you travel more slowly, but climbing a hill becomes easier.
A higher gear ratio: slower, but with more turning force.
